I-35 from RM 2243 to Southeast Inner Loop


The project includes the construction of a Continuous Flow Intersection, which is an innovative intersection, to alleviate an existing bottleneck at the intersection of RM 2243 and I-35. The project also includes operational improvements from Woodmont Drive to Railroad Avenue.

Need & Purpose
  • Increase safety and mobility, including
    • Improve traffic flow from westbound RM 2243 to southbound I-35
    • Reduce the number of potential conflicts between through traffic and left-turn traffic
Project Description
  • Replace traditional intersection with a continuous flow intersection
  • Replace existing bridge at RM 2243
  • Improve existing I-35 southbound frontage road from RM 2243 to north of SE Inner Loop
  • Reverse entrance/exit ramps along the I-35 southbound frontage road between RM 2243 and SE Inner Loop
  • Provide a northbound to southbound U-turn
  • Improve bicycle and pedestrian accommodations
  • Construction funded by the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization and TxDOT
  • Construction cost: $37.2 million
  • Finalize schematic and environmental documentation: anticipated early 2020
  • Begin Plans, Specifications and Estimates (PS&E): anticipated mid-2020
  • Complete PS&E: anticipated early 2022
  • Construction letting: mid-2022
  • Construction start: anticipated mid-2022
  • Construction completion: anticipated early 2024
