Summer Travel Safety Tips, Updates from I-35 Waco District Team

As the post-pandemic world opens up again and people travel more freely, traffic is increasing, including along Main Street Texas (otherwise known as I-35). Anxious to get out of the house and enjoy summer now that school is out, whole families are hopping in their cars and hitting the road. Construction Updates

Section 4B: Waco (12th Street to North Loop 340)

Milestones

  • Replaced side-street intersections along the southbound access road between 18th and 11th Streets.
  • Shifted traffic onto portions of the new northbound frontage road.
  • Shifted traffic onto portions of the new northbound frontage road north of US 84.
  • Shifted southbound mainlane traffic onto new pavement north of US 77.
  • Shifted northbound mainlane traffic onto new pavement north of US 77.
  • Demolished the northbound mainlane bridges over MLK Boulevard, University Parks Drive, 4th/5th Streets, and the Brazos River.

Down the Road

  • Begin demolition of the bridges over US77 and the Union Pacific Railroad.
  • Continue sidewalk and driveway construction for the northbound and southbound access road from Behrens Circle to 12th Street.
  • Begin setting the northbound retaining wall.
  • Continue the east- and west-end replacement of Culvert 5 (Waco Creek).
  • Continue tying individual inlets to the southbound stormwater trunk line.
  • Continue construction of US 84 / Waco Drive on the east side of I-35.
  • Continue northbound frontage road paving, side streets, and driveways throughout the project.
  • Continue to upgrade utilities specifically at 2nd and 4th Streets at the southbound frontage road.
  • Continue removing old pavement from the former northbound main lanes.
  • Continue drill shaft operations for new northbound structures after bridge demolitions are complete.
  • Start the sound wall on the southbound frontage road.
  • Started columns and bent caps at 11th/12th Streets, 4th/5th Streets, University Parks Drive, and MLK Boulevard.
  • Finish the northbound frontage road at Bellmead Drive.
  • Started paving of interchanges and U-turns at Behrens Circle and other interchanges.
  • Start BUS 77 paving this month.

I-35E Expansion (I-35 East/West split to Ellis County line)

Milestones

  • Switched southbound I-35E traffic onto the new concrete pavement for entire 8 miles.

Down the Road

  • Construct the Phase 3 portion of the southbound mainlanes, including earthwork and culverts.
  • Construct the I-35E southbound overpass at I-35W.
  • Construct Phase 3 concrete pavement along I-35E.
  • Construct bridge rails for the new FM 934 and FM 2959 overpasses.
  • Complete concrete paving on FM 934, FM 2959, and related exit and entrance ramps.
