A billion dollar promise to finish the I-35 expansion through Central Texas is now becoming reality. TxDOT is committed to finishing the widening of Main Street Texas to six lanes from San Antonio to Hillsboro so that our business partners, tourists and commuters will be able to travel a bit easier.

The final sections to be widened to six lanes are in Central Texas. Some areas in Waco and Hillsboro are already under construction and by 2013 we anticipate having all sections ready for construction.

Funding of Main Street Texas

In terms of dollars, expanding the final stretches of I-35 is a tall order. Funding for this massive project comes from a mix of federal funds (American Recovery and Reinvestment Act) and state funds from Proposition 12 and Proposition 14, authorized by the Texas Legislature and passed by Texas voters.

While this funding gets us started, TxDOT will continue to look for other dollars to build the remaining two unfunded sections of I-35.
